EN/ED325 - Modern Grammar
Dr. Jeff Glauner
Each teacher education student must prepare and submit a teaching package which includes a tightly focused emphasis upon one of the topics listed at the end of these instructions. This should be a practical exercise, a package which you could put to use in a classroom. It should cover five class periods and should contain the following: 1) a 300-word statement of rationale (this is mostly for me since I want to know everything you are thinking about the who, what, when, why, where, and how of your project); 2) a set of goals for the entire teaching unit; 3) five lesson plans, each of which includes specific behavioral objectives, anticipatory set, presentation of topic, shared practice, and evaluative activity; 4) worksheets, pictures, etc. that you will need to teach each lesson. You must complete some exercises your are prescribing for your students so that I can tell that you understand the materials you are assigning.
Your teaching package should also feature a thorough bibliography in MLA or APA style. Include sources of theory and practical teaching ideas in your bibliography (some of each, please). Be sure to include the grammar textbook for ED-ED325. You are expected to borrow theory from it. Also, include at least one source supporting your matrix discipline (the discipline in which you will embed your grammar lessons).
Remember! Never teach grammar in isolation. It must be logically embedded in other studies. Your package must be multidisciplinary. One discipline will be grammar (no more than 10 minutes each class period). You decide what other disciplines to include.
The project includes three submissions: prospectus, 1st draft, and final draft as follows:
1) The prospectus contains the titles, authors, and dates of publication of major works from which your project draws information and ideas and a brief statement of intentions for your project. Your prospectus should be typed (no more than one page).
2) Your first draft should contain all of your ideas for teaching, fully developed, and most of your supplementary materials. It should also contain the rationale and a bibliography. It will not be judged on its linguistic mechanics.
3) After you get the first draft back from me with comments and criticisms, you should polish it into a near-perfect final draft. Mechanics count heavily here since this is a course in grammar and you might use this package in professional teaching situations later. MLA or APA format required.
Note: Your prospectus is valued at 10% of the project grade. Your first draft is valued at 20% of the project grade. Your final draft is valued at 70% of your project grade.
Note :
I know that some of you intend to teach preschool or kindergarten, and it is possible to create a grammar curriculum for these levels. However, for the purposes of this exercise, I want lessons plans for third grade or higher. (Keep in mind that ECE certification takes you through grade three.)List of approved topics (you must choose one of these). Notice that "parts of speech" is not an option. Don't even ask!:
Submit your drafts by the specified dates indicated in the syllabus. Late submission will result in reduced credit.
