Introduction - Welcome to Week Five!

You've officially crossed the half-way marker and ventured into the next
reading of "Critical Pedagogy" by Joan Wink. This is one educator's
account of how she (and others discussed in her book) have developed their own
techniques to become lifelong learners of critical teaching. As she
discusses her journey to find critical pedagogy in her teaching practice, think
of methods YOU can use to incorporate such reflective learning in your own life.
Objectives and Learning Outcomes
Objective
2: Students will understand the impact of these different approaches to
curriculum on their educational practice.
Objective
5: Students will develop a curriculum with a clear sense of purpose,
incorporating ideas and issues we discuss, which can be used in a practical
setting.
Objective
6: Students will explore educational issues that impact the classroom and
student learning, such as issues of race, gender, class, etc.
Objective 7: Students will explore possible ways education can impact student
understanding and participation in a democratic society.
Activities
1. Please access the link below to review material and think more critically
about the content addressed.
Chapter 1 and 2 Review
2. Discussion Questions/Teamwork:
Individual discussion questions: What motivates you to learn? How
can this motivation be incorporated into curriculum development? Think of
instances when you have had to learn, relearn, or unlearn....what change
occurred in your thinking? How did this change occur? (Due by
midnight Thursday EST)
As a teamwork assignment, respond to the following questions: What ways
did the author learn from teaching the kids at Benson? How did her teaching
philosophy and curriculum change during/after this experience? Why is it
so challenging to change perspectives or shift one's methodology?
Additionally, in your assigned teams, you will review (informally) each other's
ILO's and offer each other feedback, suggestions, and ideas for improvement
throughout the week (in the curriculum project folder).
3. Outside Resource/Peer Review: Selected student(s) will virtually present (post) their "Outside Resource" assignment in the 'Conference' area folder. After reading the outside resources, each student (with the exception of the presenter) will complete a Peer Review of the outside resource. Please thoughtfully respond and include agreement/disagreement with the author's thoughts, in addition to your own perspective with reference to the text. The presenter must have the virtual presentation posted by Thursday noon (EST) and all students will complete their review by midnight Thursday (EST)
3. Create ILO's (Intended Learning Outcomes) for Curriculum Project (please see rubric for detailed information and guidance)
